Laugh Your Way to Better Health

For men in South West Queensland there’s now a simple way to find good health.

A Great Big Belly laugh is key it seems…

Steve Haddan, legendary entertainer and rugby league authority, will be amusing the crowds at Health in Men (HIM) events and the whole family is invited to join in on the fun.

HIM is an innovative new initiative from the South West Hospital and Health Service which combines comedy and health screening to improve the health and wellbeing of men in South West Queensland.

South West HHS Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery Chris Small says many men found it difficult to talk about their health and HIM was created to help break down the barriers.

“We notice many men are reluctant to take action when it comes to their health and this can have a really devastating effect in the long-term. This hesitancy can result in the late diagnosis of sometimes preventable or treatable diseases.”

HIM events will include screening stations for diabetes, alcohol related health risk, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and wellbeing for participants aged above 18-years-of-age.

Whilst the event is targeted at men, women are also encouraged to take part and the entire family can enjoy the comedy show. Every person who takes part in the screening will have their results recorded and a referral provided to take to their general practitioner (GP) if a follow-up is required.

Mr Small says the data and surveys from each event would help the South West HHS provide more targeted health promotion and prevention programs.

During the event there will also be a key note speaker from the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, who will be sharing a first-person account of living with a disease that claims the lives of about 3,300 Australian men every year.

HIM will be held in Charleville, Augathella, Bollon, Thargomindah, Quilpie, Morven, Wallumbilla, Mungindi, Dirranbandi, Cunnamulla and St George in late May and June 2018.

In April, it’s Maranoa’s turn:
